Richard L. Wollenberg
Richard Lee Wollenberg, known by his friends and family as “Wolly”, passed away after a brief illness on March 9th, 2024. A beloved figure in our community, he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will forever be cherished by all that knew him. Born in New Lexington, Ohio on February 5, 1936, to the late Daniel and Imelda Wollenberg, he was a man of unwavering integrity and boundless generosity. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington, Ohio, where he was a proud basketball state champion and met the love of his life Cindy Wollenberg. Following graduation, he moved to Canton to start his family and embarked on a remarkable journey as a co-owner and president of Ben Heggy Candy Company, where he has worked for an incredible 70 years. Beyond his dedication to work, Dick will be remembered mostly for the love he shared with his family and friends. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, whose warmth and compassion touched the lives of all who knew him. He was a member of Christ the Servant Catholic Parish, Christ the Servant Men’s Club, and the Notre Dame Club of Canton. One of his greatest passions was Notre Dame football, enjoying home games and tailgating with his closest friends and always cheering on his beloved Irish. Dick will be deeply missed by his sons: Benedict “Benny” Wollenberg, Daniel (Toula Filou) Wollenberg both of Canton; daughters: Patty Wollenberg, Suzanne (Bill) Dempsey all of North Canton; grandchildren: Ben, Brandon, Brian, Ryan (Ali), Sean, and Paige; great grandchild: Josephine and many friends. He was preceded in death by six brothers, five sisters and his former wife, Lucinda Heggy Wollenberg. Though he may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. Rest in peace, Dad, you will be forever loved and remembered. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 11:00 am in Christ the Servant Catholic Church with Fr. Scott Kopp as celebrant. Entombment will be in North Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call Monday afternoon from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Wackerly Funeral Home. Donations may be made in his name to Sancta Clara Monastery.
